Shape and Texture Sensory Bin
We’ve been learning our shapes and got a great recommendation for a connecting book; Triangle, by Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen. The story is fun, and the illustrations are full of wonderful texture. While reading, I started putting together this sensory bin in my head.
The bin plays on the visual themes of the book - the simple shapes and rich textures. It gave Rémy the chance to practice some of the fine motor skills he’s been working on while beefing up on vocabulary words like soft, silky, smooth, and rough.
The bin saw action for about a half hour each day for a week straight. He piled up rocks inside the steel shapes, he did his best with the tongs (something he’s still figuring out) and practiced filling up and closing the little spice jars.
Before playing I would read him the book, and the last couple days I propped up the book as a backdrop. He loved matching the shapes in the bin to the characters in the book.
