Exploring Flowers

Like most children, Remy was drawn to plants from the start. Whenever he encountered a plant, he would shake branches and pull at leaves. There were countless times where we had to remind him to touch gently.

Then we started arranging flowers and he was able to handle plants every week. He really enjoyed it, but there were still a lot of reminders for gentle touches. It wasn’t possible for him to freely examine the leaves and flowers.

I wanted to give him that freedom. I wanted him to be able to see all the different parts of a flower and not concern himself with anything but letting his senses explore. So I set up a flower sensory bin that would allow him to do just that.

For the base of the bin, I used rose petals. They were perfect because they were brightly colored and smelled lovely. He was able to scoop up petals and bury other flowers underneath.

I gathered several different flowers from the garden and presented them for him to compare. He was most delighted with the small flowers and how they moved when he shook them.
